Another Sunday morning would see the intermediates take on Aghada at home in what was the second game of the campaign. On a heavy Fitzgearld park pitch, there was a strong wind blowing down the pitch into the bottom goals. Davy Farrell would take charge and we would start by playing into this strong wind. The opening play saw Martin Brennan stick the ball into the net in the first minute. Aghada would reply 3 minutes later with a point only to be counter acted by a swift 45 taken into Kieran Morrison who popped it over the crossbar. De Roiste kicked two placed balls to stretch Fermoys lead further and during which, Aghada picked up the first black card of the game. Quickness and strength shown by Morrison in the corner again allowed him to tag on 2 more points to his tally. The opponents then got up and running, pointed three of their own but momentum would swing Fermoys way again when Brennan would have a goal disallowed in what looked to be a legal goal. Brennan then scored a point from an almost impossible angle brief minutes later. Aghada received their second black card on the stroke of first half for a high tackle on Brian O’Sullivan in the middle of the pitch. A beautiful movement in play then put Darragh O’Carroll in the position to rifle the ball into the back of the net for the second time in the half. High tempo and hard work saw Fermoys defensive six come out on top more often then not, allowing the middle 8 to have time and control of the game and deliver such good ball into the forward duet of Morrison and Brennan who had racked up 1-4 of the spoils. Halftime Fermoy lead 2-6 to 0-6.
Starting where they left off, Fermoy, who now had the aid of the elements, would trade blows with Aghada and came to a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-9. De Roiste would then use the strong wind to sweep a huge placed ball over the black spot. Introduction of fresh legs in Rory McEvoy and James Campion took the place of Josh Pyne and Darragh O’Carroll. With ten minutes remaining the third and final goal would hit the back of the net in what can only be described as hard-worked and earned with a broken ball won by McEvoy passed off to Shanahan on to Tomas Clancy who kicked a high ball in to Brennan broken to the oncoming Hutchings laid off to Campion to place it unto the bottom left. The most showed signs of the direct football in which the lads are capable. 3-9 to 0-10 was the score as we went into the final five minutes. With tiring legs a few fresh faces were brought in in the back line and forward to see the game out. The game ended 3-11 to 1-10 and Fermoy face Aghabullogue next Sunday away.
