For the second time in one week we travelled to Carrigaline but this time to play the big ball. In what is our last game before the championship game against Newmarket on Sunday coming, we would have close to everyone available. With some more training under our belt since the Dohenys game hopefully everything would go to plan. For the first 10 minutes there was nothing between the teams, trading point for point until we would strike the net first with an excellent drilled move finished by Arlene Aherne. Carrigaline reacted well with a score straight away only to be countered by another free from O’Haganwho seemed to be flying from placed ball and in general play. Fermoy would see the green flag raised through a perfect finish for Ruairi O’Hagan putting a bit of breathing space between us and Carrigaline. Arlene would hit the net again for his second and Fermoys third just before the end of the half. The teams went in at half time 3-5 to 0-7.
The first half showed good signs of play but Carrigaline would show why they are senior and reduce the lead to a 4 point game 3-7 to 0-12. The game began to heat up and Carrigaline would be down to 14 men through a second yellow card for foul play. With the referee losing control of the game he then awarded two Carrigline points extremely questionable and in one case allowed a point waved wide by two umpires. These turns in the game shouldn’t play as reasons for Carrigaline making such a come back but the referee played a big part in it. The two awarded points would reduce the lead but Fermoy raised the green flag again and mounted up some wides through bad kicking decisions. The game would end 4-7 to 0-16. Good preparation for the game next Sunday by facing a strong Carrigaline panel, hopefully pace and skill gained over the last few games will allow Fermoy to pass Newmarket with ease.
