At a sundrenched St. Finbarrs ground last Sunday, May 7 we lined out against Bishopstown in the premier 2A championship final, After a great first round win against Mallow and another impressive win in the semi finals against Carrigtwohill last Wednesday night in Watergrasshill it was a quick turnround to get ready for the final. A lot of hard work had been done in training and we did not want to leave St. Finbarrs ground without that cup. With 11.30am kick off fast approaching, we warmed up diligently and headed to the main pitch ready for battle.
We settled into the match well and got stuck in from the word go, 100% effort. We finished the first half leading comfortably on a scoreline of 1.8 to 3pts. We had been in this position in the semi final with a good lead so we knew what to expect in the second half from bishopstown.
As the second half resumed bishopstown upped the intensity and slowly they crept back into the game. We had a few shaky moments and before we knew the margin was only 5 points. We kept our composure and battled away get points and with the clock ticking down we were nearly at the final whistle. A few minutes seemed like hours and we thought we would never hear the whistle.
Sheer delight and relief were the feelings of all involved as the final whistle blew. When Captain Fantastic Darragh Daly lifted the cup it was fantastic. This team has been together as a group since U6 and we have had disappointments in matches before so it was all worthwhile to get the win and to be county champs. It was a pleasure to watch such great bunch of boys get their just rewards for all their hard work. The full time was Fermoy 2:17 Bishopstown 2:05
