Saturday evening set the scene for the first round of the Junior Footballers campaign, where last year they fell short in the final to the hands of Ballyclough. Kilshannig would be the team in Fermoys way and the day was perfect football conditions. Killavullens pitch was looking as good as ever and there would be no excuse for not having a good game ahead of us. Fermoy came off the back of a good league win over Ballyclough last time out. Dave Farrell (jnr.) took control of the game and got the game going. In a shock start Fermoy were slow out the blocks and gave Kilshannig a head start of 8 points in the form of two goals and two points. While kilshannig had got the scoring up and running Fermoy began to find rhythm and the forwards found their range. Fermoy cut the deficit to 5 points before going in at the break. The defence was now established and slowing down Kilshannig much better then the start of the game.
At the restart Kilshannig points to stretch the lead out again to 7 but Fermoy would raise the green flag with a well taken goal. The next 10 minutes where well contested passages of play where it became an end to end game and left the score board at 1-7 to 2-7 heading into the last 10 minutes. Fermoy even got the deficit down to only 2 points but looked to run out of steam after chasing the game for so long literally from the throw in. Kilshannig went on to push the boat out further and the final score was 2-11 to 1-8 in favour of Kilshannig. The early lead proved to be too much and there was a sense that Fermoy would have put it to Kilshannig if the eight point head start hadn’t been so easily given away. Junior is one of those grades where availability and on the given day anything could happen unfortunately Fermoy where on the wrong side of those few things. We now look to our next few weeks and hope to build with what is a young but experienced team through league games and training together. Ballyclough will now be our next Championship outing but first we face Buttevant Sunday morning away.
