Premier Intermediates Crash Out Against Cloyne

Pairc Ui Rinn was the scene for Fermoy Premier Intermediates to face Cloyne in the PIHC Quarter Final, winner would face Mallow in the Semi-final. A clash between these teams always tends to be heated and the stakes were high. There was no separating the teams for the opening 10 minutes with Cloyne having the minimum margin of a one-point lead 0-5 to 0-3. Fermoy would lose ground over the next 10 minutes and they would prove to be the difference in the game as a whole. It would take 15 minutes for Fermoy to register another score in the half were as Cloyne were pointing and stretching the margin. The half ended 0-5 to 0-11 in favour of the Imokilly side. Conor Quinn in goal looked to pull a hamstring in the half too but managed to play on but eventually would need to be replaced.  The O’Sullivan brothers, Paudie and Colm were causing trouble in front of goal and in the middle of the pitch and Cahill at centre back was keeping Fermoy from building any momentum. Fermoy racked up a number of wides in the opening half and needed to be more direct in the second half if there was any hope of keeping the Championship hopes alive. With only 30 minutes to prove their place in the competition, it was do or die. Neither teams took the scoreboard by surprise at the start of the second half but it showed that the defending and work was going in from both sides. On the 40th minute Fermoy beat Cusack when Liam Colman struck a penalty sweetly to bring the score to 1-6 to 1-13. Quinn made way for Tom O’Brien in goal and Eric Delaney made his way on for Mark Flynn and both lads would find themselves in the action straight away. With 10 minutes remaining, Jack Hutchings would score Fermoys second goal leaving the sore 2-10 to 1-16. Delaney also found himself in front of goal twice but unlucky not to see the net rattle. It wasn’t to be Fermoys day as Cloyne pointed twice before poking one past O’Brien. It ended 2-12 to 2-19 and Cloyne march on to the Semi and look to go one step further than the previous year. This draws a close to all Adult Championships but hints that it might be a needed break after some busy years across the codes in recent seasons. The team the lined out: C Quinn, R O’Callaghan, D O’Carroll, J Daly, P Clancy, B O’Sullivan, S Shanahan,, M Brennen, K Morrison, L Colman, D Geary, T Clancy P Shanahan, J Hutchings, M Flynn.
