Monday evening saw the Minors face St. Michaels in only the First round of the championship in Mallow. A wet evening that proved tricky at times especially when it came to scoring. With both teams getting to terms with conditions, the opening few minutes were high in wides and handling errors. Fermoy found range through 3 well taken scores in the first quarter. St. Michaels got their chance to raise the green flag when I break down in the backs left the Blackrock forward space to fire home. Ryan Sargent came to the rescue with an excellent full stretch save too keep Michaels at bay but not for long as a close quarter mix up left the ball in the back of the net. 0-5 to 2-0 after 20minutes. The conditions proving to be the problem in kicking scores. Fermoy gathered a bit of momentum as the half was coming to a close and Greg Lardner and Adam Creed acted as the catalysts for this as David Lardner and David O’Callaghan kept the scoreboard ticking. The half ended 0-8 to 2-0. It looked to be a low scoring game but the one thing that stood out was the effort from Fermoy, it was some of the decisions and handling that was keeping the game so close. Fermoy were rewarded after 15 minutes of the second half when they raised the green. This brought the game to 1-9 to 2-2. After this Fermoy wouldn’t score again in normal time but would have to work to keep St. Michaels from winning. Michaels determination got them a goal in the 61st minute and even pointed to leave the score line 1-10 to 3-3. Fermoy progress into the winners round and St. Michaels must now go the back door route. With the pressure of the first round off now Fermoy can Train hard and get back to the capable footballers that they are. The team the lined out as following; R Sargent, D Mulcahy. J Molloy, L Aherne, J Scannell, A Creed, S McCarthy, N Collins, G Lardner, C Hurley, D Dawson, S O’Keeffe, D O’Callaghan, D Lardner and S Holland.
