Fermoy lined out last Saturday afternoon against Na Piarsaigh in Rathcormac to book their place in the U21A Hurling Final. This had been the first time Fermoy had been back together as a full unit since the North Cork Final victory over Kilworth. With a lot of the U18s involved with St. Colmans, the others trained as much as they could in the meantime. Fermoy started the game with intent through 3 points before the city side opened their scoring. The opening half remained a one-sided game with Fermoys full forward line proving very efficient and Eric Murphy stood above all. Na Pairsaigh would score the only goal of the game just before the break with a piercing run through the defence only to hit the post and fall to an unmarked corner forward. Up until that point backs such as Ronan Morrison and Ross O’Sullivan showed the younger lads how to stand up and impose themselves on the game, leading from the front. The half forward line of Dale Dawson, Danny Flynn and Conor Barry had a thankless job with constant running of the lines and delivering ball into the dangerous trio of Murphy, Aherne and O’Keeffe. The half ended 0-15 to 1-5 and Fermoy still needed to get championship minutes into some players.
The second half was more of the same, with Fermoy taking up where they left off in scoring 5 points to Na Pairsaighs 2 points in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. The City side wouldn’t score for the remainder of the half as Fermoy pointed through Murphy, O’Keeffe and David Lardner. Fermoy never found the net during the game but only to the credit of the Na Pairsaigh sides keeper. Fermoy made changes in the backs and forwards, getting important minutes into player such as Sean McCarthy and David O’Callaghan and as the half went on, Cian O’Carroll, JJ Hickey and Colm Hurley were introduced. Fermoy closed out the game just shy of the 30 points but an 18-point winning margin, booking a place in the County Final which the opposition was still unknown. 3 teams remain on the other side with Castlelyons, Inniscarra and Clonakilty still to battle it out.
